De Britse managing Partner Jeremy Hoyland van Simmons & Simmons heeft in een uitgelekte e-mail geschreven dat de associates – vergeleken met de concurrentie – veel te weinig uren schrijven. De mail lekte uit via Rollonfriday.
Hoyland schrijft in de e-mail: “When I compare us to our peers, the utilisation of our lawyers is consistently below that of other firms. This does not just relate to US firms (which tend to run off a higher utilisation, lower rate model) but to a wide range of firms, some of which consistently report utilisation figures 500 hours+ above ours. This issue does not just apply in one office or one practice group – it is an issue across groups and offices and one we must address.”
Rollonfriday schrijft dat veel advocatenkantoren op dit moment de duimschroeven aandraaien, maar dat ze niet zo openlijk doen als Hoyland in zijn e-mail. De commentaren op het bericht zijn scherp. De een schrijft dat Simmons & Simmons eren sweatshop dreigt te worden. Een andere respondent: “This email demonstrates that point, even if there is a valid point to be addressed the complaining impersonal method of delivery is terrible, demotivating fear mongering and a prime example of how bad management often is in firms.”
